What Is a Patient Care Technician?
Certified patient care technicians (PCTs) provide direct care and support to patients under the supervision of registered nurses and other healthcare providers. They often work in hospitals and extended care facilities such as nursing homes, residential care centers, and rehabilitation centers.
The future is bright for entry-level patient care technicians. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment in this field is expected to grow 4% from 2023 to 2033.
In California, patient care technicians earn an average annual salary of $67,173, significantly higher than the national average.
Patient care technicians (PCTs) are often mistaken for certified nursing assistants (CNAs) or certified medical assistants (CMAs), but there are key differences.
PCT vs. CNA:
PCTs and CNAs share many responsibilities, including assisting patients with daily living tasks and offering emotional support. However, PCTs have a broader scope of practice. In addition to basic care, they may draw blood, dispense medication, and support more advanced clinical needs. This expanded training allows PCTs to work in specialized settings, such as oncology, pediatrics, and intensive care.
PCT vs. CMA:
While PCTs focus on direct, hands-on patient care, CMAs split their time between clinical and administrative duties. CMAs often work in outpatient settings like clinics or doctors' offices, where they might check vitals, schedule appointments, and prepare exam rooms. PCTs, on the other hand, typically work in hospitals or long-term care facilities. Their role is centered entirely on supporting patients' physical and emotional needs, with minimal or no administrative responsibilities.

For $2,995 or less, you can become certified as an entry-level PCT in as little as 8 weeks. Interest-free payment plans are available, and everyone qualifies. No previous medical experience is required.
This is a hybrid course, with 50% instructor-led online lectures and 50% hands-on lab training. The program is authorized to run through our partnerships with adult schools and community colleges.
Upon graduation, students are prepared to take the national Patient Care Technician/Assistant Certification exam through the National Healthcare Association (NHA).

Externship
The Patient Care Technician Program includes placement into an 80-hour externship at the end of the course.
While a clinical externship is not required to obtain certification in California, the experience helps our students get their foot in the door faster because they are job-ready.

Certification
Tuition includes the national CPCT/A (Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant) exam, administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).
On the last day of class, students will be prepared to take the national certification exam. Once they pass the program and the national exam, students are ready to begin their externship and will receive a certificate of completion for our program.
