With no shortage of job opportunities available here in sunny California, becoming a medical billing and coding specialist can be your ticket to a successful, satisfying, long-term career! Here’s what you need to know about getting started on your journey so that you can get closer to achieving success in this rewarding field!

1. Possess a High School Diploma or GED/High School Equivalency

Most post-secondary schools or training programs will require their students to possess a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent. This is a requirement at CALRegional. Should you not have your high school diploma or GED required for training, we can help you attain this online for free!

2. Successfully Complete a Medical Billing and Coding Program

Though the State of California does not have set education requirements for becoming a medical billing and coding specialist, most employers require or encourage certification. Naturally, employers will look for candidates who obtained their certification from a reputable organization such as CALRegional.

CALRegional’s 11-week Medical Billing & Coding Program is held 100% online. Training includes 144 hours of online instruction where students will learn to:

  • Review medical records and translate patients’ diagnoses into medical codes, including ICD, CPT, and HCPCS.
  • Determine care services and manage the health insurance claim process.
  • Basic anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Audit medical billing for compliance and fraud prevention.

3. Pass the National Certification Exam

To be eligible to take the Certified Billing & Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam, you must have your high school diploma, GED, or equivalency and complete a medical billing and coding program within the last 5 years.

Tuition at CALRegional includes the Medical Coder & Biller Certification (CBCS) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Students will take the exam on the last day of class.

68% of employers require or encourage certification for billing and coding specialists.

Unlike many of our programs at CALRegional, the Online Medical Billing & Coding Program does not include or require an externship. Once students successfully pass the class and exam, they will receive a certificate of completion for our program and are ready for employment in the field!
